Everything You Need to Know About Acetate Eyeglass Manufacturing

They can provide the latest designs and trends while maintaining the quality control standards and reasonable pricing. At Techno Design Optical Factory, we specialize in manufacturing acetate eyeglass frames that are flexible and durable in addition to offering multiple aesthetic options. In this blog, we look at the finer aspects of acetate eyeglass manufacturing process.

What are Acetate Glasses?

Acetate, obtained from wood pulp and natural cotton fibers, is made of multiple layers of cellulose fibers that are welded into plastic-like sheets. This plant-based material also goes by the names of cellulose acetate, zylonite or zyl.

The acetate material was first used as an eyeglass frame in the late 1940s. It was a superior alternative to plastics, the most common eyeglass frame material used in those times. Acetate glasses are durable, lightweight, and good for the environment. Over the years, the material has also evolved in quality and appearance. Today, they have a transparent and high gloss appearance. Making the acetate sheet determines the strength, durability, and looks of the material. Acetate sheets are cut, formed, and polished to be used in eyewear designing and manufacturing

  • How Acetate Glasses are Manufactured?

1. Making the Acetate Sheets

Acetate frames can be made in a wide array of bright, beautiful colors. Organic colors are mixed with the acetate in its raw paste form to make this happen. Rollers mix and thin acetate sheets are made to get the desired color effect. Custom eyewear manufacturers can also produce complex color creations by layering multiple colored sheets and pressing them together into one. The layers are molded into large blocks, from which single sheets are extracted and then dried in mega-sized kilns for about a fortnight to solidify the material.

2. Cutting and Forming

CNC machines are used to cut the acetate sheet as per the shape of the frame design, which is stored as an input in the machine. High-skilled technicians give shape and form to the individual components of an eyeglass frame by hand. The curve of the frame front is shaped, the core wires and hinges are pressed into the material, and nose pads are applied as per the design – all of it hand finished.

3. Polishing

The different components of an eyeglass frame are put together in a container as a giant washing machine along with little chips of wood and small stones. These parts are tumbled together for hours on end; and finally, each frame is hand polished by expert technicians to give them a high lustrous look.

4. Assembly

Next in the process, the arms of the eyeglass frame are fastened to the main body of the frame with tiny screws and rivets. The optical lenses are installed and after the final cleaning, the frames are ready.
